Tryouts Winter 2019

ALL FORMS ARE DUE ON NOVEMBER 2, 2018.

 

ALL FORMS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE ACTIVITIES OFFICE

 

WHAT YOU NEED TO TRYOUT: Everyone MUST complete ALL of the following: 

  • *VHSL Physical Form: Complete and turned in to the Athletic Trainers – if you completed it for a

      fall sport, you are OK.

  • *Emergency Care Form:  FULLY completed by EVERYONE – even if you did a fall sport

      place in Indoor Track & Field mailbox. 

  • Concussion Education:  Must be completed online by BOTH you AND one parent/guardian before

      you can tryout.  If you completed it for a fall sport, you are OK. www.fcps.edu/sports.

                     

 

TRYOUT SYSTEM: All athletes must tryout in at least three events. Exception: XC athletes selected for XC Regionals or XC State Championships. Athletes will be evaluated based on their effort, results and attitude. Team selection will be announced at a mandatory team meeting on Monday, November 12th.

 

*TRYOUT SCHEDULE:

Monday, November 5th: 10:00am at the track – Student Holiday

  • General practice at the track. Only those cleared (physical, emergency care form and concussion) can participate in practice, no exception. We will coach all the events preparing you for the tryouts.

Tuesday, November 6th: 10:00am at the track – Student Holiday

  • General practice at the track. Only those cleared (physical, emergency care form and concussion) can participate in practice, no exception. We will coach all the events preparing you for the tryouts.

Wednesday, November 7th: 3:30pm at the track

  • 55m dash
  • 500m run
  • 1600m run

Thursday, November 8th: 3:30pm at the track

  • Shot Put
  • High Jump
  • Long jump
  • Triple Jump
  • Pole Vault

Friday, November 9th: 3:30pm at the track

  • 55m Hurdles
  • 800 meter run
  • 300m dash

Monday, November 12th: TBD

  • Mandatory Meeting with final cuts.  Athletes who made the team will have 1st day of practice.

COSTS:  New athletes must purchase a uniform if you have never been on a Woodson cross country, indoor track, or outdoor track & field team.  We also encourage you to purchase spirit wear. Warm clothing is required. The spirit wear and uniforms are good for all three sports for as long as you are at Woodson.  If money is a problem, please see Coach Zuber.  Make sure you have running specific shoes as lower body injuries are often caused by wearing the wrong type of shoe.

 

EXPECTATIONS:  This is a VARSITY SPORT and attendance at practices and meets are MANDATORY.  We understand you are busy with other activities and request that you carefully consider your time commitments when deciding whether to try out for track and field.  We have practice every week day regardless of weather.  The official schedule will be posted on our team website. The team website is: www.wtwoodsonsports.org.  Please continue to check the site and make sure you are able to attend the meets that are scheduled for you.

Running events:

4x800m Relay

55m Hurdles

Shot Put

 

 

 

PREPARATION: You MUST be in shape and ready to tryout to be successful.  If you are not participating in a fall sport, here is a good workout to get you started and ready for the first day. Build slowly and stretch before and after the workout.  You should be running four days a week, three of those days followed by all of the core exercises. 

 

 Running suggestions:                                                                 Core Exercises - 3 days a week

~ 2 days, run for 20-25 minutes or 3 miles easy                          ~ 3 x 10 push-ups

~ 2 days, run for 15 minutes or 2 miles moderate                       ~ 3 x 25 sit-ups

~ 10x150m with walk 50m walk rest                                            ~ 3 x 25 lunges

~ 8x200m with 200m walk rest                           

~ Distance runners should include 5x30sec pickups in runs          

~ Sprinters should do 8x100m accelerations after a run
