FIRST DAY OF TRYOUTS: Monday, February 24th at 3:30PM. Meet at the WTW track.
FORMAT: Sprinters need to tryout in 100m, 200m, and 400m. Distance runner 400m, 800m, 1600m. Jumpers need to tryout in jumps, 100m, and 200m and throwers; the throws and 100m. If you don’t know what event(s) you are best at, you need to try as many events as possible. The more we see of you, the better the chances of making the team.
CUTS: Monday, March 2nd at 3:00pm in Cafeteria A.
EXPECTATIONS: This is a VARSITY SPORT and attendance at practices and meets are MANDATORY.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: We understand that you are busy with other activities and request that you carefully consider your time commitments when deciding whether to try out. It’s the responsibility of the student-athlete, and their parents, to inform Coach Zuber of any conflicts. All conflicts need to be addressed at the beginning of the season.
PRACTICE: We have practice every week day and most Saturdays regardless of weather. Dress appropriate.
FUNDRAISER: We host Legard Relays Invitational every year. This year it’s on April 4, 2020. Last year 40 teams and 1500 athletes participated. This is our main fundraiser for both indoor and outdoor track & field and everyone will either compete or work the meet.
SCHEDULE: Please make sure you are available to attend the meets that are scheduled for you.
EXPENSE: New athletes to WTW cross country, indoor or outdoor track & field, must purchase a uniform. We also encourage everyone to purchase spirit wear. The spirit wear and uniforms are good for all three sports at Woodson. Make sure you have running specific shoes as lower body injuries are often caused by wearing the wrong type of shoes.
QUESTIONS: Contact Coach Zuber at KaZuber@fcps.edu
EVENTS: These events are offered in a regular outdoor track & field meet.
4 x 400m Relay
PREPARATION: Make sure you are in shape and ready to compete at tryouts. If you are not participating in a winter sport, you should be running four days a week, three of those days followed by core exercises (push-ups, sit-ups, lunges).
Carolyn Legard had a huge impact on track and field throughout Northern Virginia. She was a physical education teacher and a coach at W.T. Woodson High School from 1962 to 1985. She was also one of the main driving forces behind increasing the number of female sports in Fairfax County.
As a track and field coach, her girl’s teams amassed 13 District Championships, two Regional Championships and a State Championship. Her teams were well rounded and always ready to compete in the championship meets at the end of the season.
Carolyn left W.T. Woodson in 1985 to help coach the women’s team at George Mason University. She helped Mason win numerous Conference Championships and coached a couple of All-Americans. She is enshrined in the George Mason Athletic Hall of Fame.
Carolyn left the area in 1994 but returned to award the medals at the first Legard Relays in 1996. Carolyn passed away in 2004 but her impact on female sports continues to this day. Carolyn Legard was inducted into W.T. Woodson Hall of Fame in 2019.
