The Cavaliers faced the Madison Warhawks in their home opener. Another chilly night for the Cavs. Cuviello and Cryblskey combined to win the faceoff and put the Cavs on offense. The Warhawks took possession on a turnover and fired their 1st shot of the night. Garlepp made the save and the Cavs cleared for their next possession. The teams traded tough defense forcing turnovers for the next 3 minutes. Andrews had a quick pass to Fruchterman who found the net for a 1-0 Cavs lead. Cuviello won another faceoff to gain possession. Solomon slashed through two defenders but his goal was waived off on a crease violation. The Cavs struck again as Phan skipped a pass to Hoffman who lined up the shot and drilled it into the top left for a 2-0 lead with 5 minutes left. Garlepp had two more saves before Madison finally scored with 2 minutes left to cut the lead to 2-1.
Cuviello and Cryblskey combined to win the faceoff yet again to start the 2nd quarter. Both teams played tough defense forcing turnovers. Solomon forced a loose ball and used his magic wand to come up with the ball against 3 defenders. To top it off the frustrated Warhawks fouled him to give the Cavs a man-up advantage. The Cavs defense took turns stopping the Warhawks. Magee relentless pushing the attack out and forcing him to give up the ball. Farr came up with a ground ball by the cage and then drew a foul from the attack to give the Cavs a man- advantage. Solomon made Madison pay 26 seconds later taking a feed from Fruchterman and firing a shot top left to put the Cavs up 3-1. It would be the only goal of the quarter. The Warhawks nearly scored off a turnover but Garlepp turned the breakaway attempt aside to keep the score 3-1. The Warhawks kept up the offensive pressure keeping possession for nearly 4 minutes. Erwin forced a loose ball that Cryblskey gobbled up to finally relieve the pressure and the Cavs went into halftime holding a 3-1 lead.
Early in the 3rd quarter the Warhawks had a 2-minute man-advantage. The defense of Stedham, Magee, Swanton, Cryblskey, and Phan played exceptional defense. Garlepp deflected their 1st shot and made a save on their 2nd shot and started the Cavs on a fast break with a long lead pass theat Fruchterman battled to win against 2 defenders. The goalie made a save on his shot and Fruchterman once again won the ground ball to keep possession. The goalie deflected his shot but Fruchterman once again came up with the ground ball. Soloman made it pay off with a beautiful dodge through a double-team to make it 4-1. Phan dazzled the crowd with a triple spin move past 3 defenders. Madison went back up a man but Cryblskey forced a turnover and raced up the sideline. After a time out the Cavs weren’t able to get a clear and Madison took advantage to close the gap to 4-2 with 6 minutes left in the quarter. Farr helped slow the Madison momentum racing onto the field and checking the ball away from the Warhawk middie. After a scramble at midfield, Farr once again checked the ball loose where Magee scooped up the ground ball and drew a foul dodging through the frustrated Warhawks. Phan passed to Solomon who drilled the shot to give the Cavs a 3 goal lead at 5-2. Madison found a cutter in front of the net to cut the lead to 5-3 with 4 minutes left and drew a foul to go back on man-up. Cuviello teamed with Erwin to get possession and burn valuable seconds off the penalty. The Cavs defense continued to excel with Stedham and Magee double teaming their attack and eventually getting a take away by Stedham. Madison had 1 last chance to score in the quarter but Garlepp made a great save to keep it 5-3 heading into the final quarter.
Magee had a takeaway and fed Farr who had a clear down the right side. After a Cavs turnover Madison scored to cut the lead to 1. The Warhawks had momentum on their side and then drew 2 fouls to have a 2-man advantage. Garlepp stoned the attack from the top of the crease. Stedham blocked a shot with his body and the Cavs killed the penalty. Madison kept up the pressure and Garlepp had to make 2 more saves to keep the lead. The pressure paid off as the Warhawks broke through to tie the game with 7 minutes left. Cuviello won the following faceoff clean to get a needed offensive possession. Andrews dodged by the Warhawk defense and found Hoffman on the right side. His lefty shot was true and gave the Cavs the lead again just 41 seconds after the Madison score. Cuviello won the faceoff cleanly again and the Cavs offense went back to work. Fruchterman took a pass at X and dodged in front of the goal before spinning back left and under the d-pole and stuffed a shot by the goalie for a 7-5 lead with 5 minutes left in the game. Madison tried to answer back but Solomon found Hoffman on a long clearing pass and the Cavs started to drain the clock. After the Warhawks gained possession Cavs forced a loose ball and Stedham scooped it up and raced up field for a clear, despite taking a big hit in the back near midfield. Solomon burned a solid 30 seconds and then Fruchterman showed off his matador skills against 3 defenders. The Warhawks didn’t quit and forced a turnover and drew a foul that lead to a breakaway. Garlepp made an unbelievable kick save and then smothered the rebound to deny a goal. Madison had a man-advantage but Magee forced an errant pass to get possession. He then tossed the ball high into the night sky as the clock ticked down. Madison gained possession and fired a long pass downfield to an open attack that Garlepp raced out and checked just as he was shooting to force the shot high. The Cavs then closed out the game to go to 2-0 on the season.
In a defensive game, Garlepp was the difference with 13 saves vs only 4 for the Warhawks. He along with the man-down team held Madison to 1 goal during 7 minutes of man-up including a minute with a 2 man-advantage. Cryblskey lead the way with 5 groundballs. Solomon lead the offense with 3 goals while Hoffman and Fruchterman had 2 each. Fruchterman also had an assist. Phan and Andrews each had 2 assists.
The Cavs are 2-0 on the season and play T.C. Williams at 8:00 on Monday at home in the Spring Break Tournament.
