The Cavs played their 3rdgame of the week taking on Conference rival West Springfield at home. On the first warm night of the year the Cavs faced a determined Spartan squad, much like the 300 who held the Persians back at the pass of Thermopylae. History and film buffs will remember the battle. Much like those Spartans, West Springfield tried to hold the Cavs at bay. Cuviello won the opening faceoff and Solomon muscled his way into the crease where he drew a foul to put the Cavs man-up. The Spartan goalie made a nice save and the Spartans killed the penalty. Garlepp made a great save denying a cutting Spartan coming down the right lane. The Spartans got another chance and this time they scored for a 1-0 lead. The Spartan sideline erupted in cheers. Their goalie kept the Cavs off the scoreboard with a great save. Stedham then forced a takeaway with Hoffman snaring the loose ball near midfield. Solomon found Hoffman near the top of the box and he ripped the shot top left to tie the game. Cuviello won the faceoff clean and the Cavs were back on the attack. After a turnover, Hoffman stick checked the ball free near midfield as the Spartans were trying for a clear. Bower was hustling on the play and scooped up the ball to get possession back for the Cavs. Another Spartan save gave them possession. Garlepp made another save and the Cavs cleared into the Spartan zone. On a scramble play Bower pushed the ball through to Hoffman to keep possession. He then drew a foul to put the Cavs man-up again. Hoffman then fired a diagonal pass through the defense to Fruchterman who stuffed the shot home for a 2-1 lead. After a Cav turnover, Phan turned on the jets and ran down the Spartan middie and stick checked the ball loose and gathered up the loose ball. The Spartan goalie made a great save to rob the Cavs of another goal. Garlepp than made a great save on a laser shot and followed that up with another save off the rebound to keep the Cavs on top. After a Cavs turnover, Fruchterman ran down the middie and checked the ball and stick away to get possession back. Andrews created another yard sale just before the quarter ended.
Cuviello started the 2ndquarter like the 1stwith a clean faceoff win. The teams traded turnovers with Cryblskey getting a check and groundball. Morris hustled up the sideline and scooped the ball out of the air just before it would have landed out of bounds. Their goalie made another nice save but Solomon regained possession with a takeaway near midfield. The Spartan goalie made yet another save on a shot from the crease. On the next Cav possession, Solomon beat a double team down the middle and fed Morris who stuffed it by the goalie to put the Cavs up 3-1. Cuviello fought for the faceoff and eventually pushed the ball down field where Stedham gathered it up. We turned the ball over and the Spartans took advantage hitting a cutter to make it 3-2. The Spartans were hanging in there despite being outshot by a wide margin. In fact, that would be their only shot of the quarter. Morris drew a foul to put the Cavs man-up. The Cavs moved the ball around until Bower found Phan open on the left side of the goal. Phan loaded up for the shot and fired it past the goalie to make it 4-2. After forcing a turnover Phan drew a foul and the Cavs were back on the attack. Solomon quickly found Fruchterman who buried the shot to make it 5-2 at the half. The Spartans were happy only being down 3.
Solomon stripped the ball away to start the 3rdquarter and then drew yet another foul from the Spartan defense. Hoffman hustled near midfield to save a loose ball and then passed to Solomon. Solomon drew the Spartan defense towards him before quickly hitting Fruchterman off the right side who drilled the shot for a 6-2 lead. The Spartan defense was beginning to crack under the constant pressure from the Cavs. Magee scooped up a groundball off a long clearing pass from the Spartans. Stedham took the pass and wove his way through the defense for a clear and drew a foul from the frustrated defense. Bower found Hoffman and his shot ripped the net for a 7-2 lead. Fruchterman forced a turnover and the Cavs looked to build on their lead. Solomon pressed in on the left and was knocked to the ground, no matter, he rifled a shot in from the seat of his pants and it was 8-2 Cavs. The Spartans weren’t ready to give up as they scored to cut the lead to 8-3. After a Stedham takeaway, Fruchterman dodged down the middle of the defense and bounced the shot past the goalie to make it 9-3. On the next Spartan possession, Magee harassed the Spartan attack at X and used his magic stickwork to get possession. Duer then raced up field to get the clear. Sloan found Andrews camped on the crease and his shot made it 10-3. Chong relieved Garlepp in goal and immediately made a great save robbing the Spartan attackman on the crease to end the quarter.
Chong started the 4thquarter in the same fashion with a beautiful save. Solomon dodged down the left side and ripped the shot to make it 11-3 Cavs. On a man-down for the Cavs Chong denied the Spartans. Stoll played tough defense and Smith applied a hard hit to knock the ball loose with Chong hustling out to get the groundball. Hoffman fed Sloan on the crease and he ripped it by the goalie for his 1stgoal of the season and a 12-3 lead. Nijjar played tough defense on the next possession frustrating the Spartan attackman. Erwin fought through a scrum on a man-down coming away with the ball and then racing up field with all 6 Spartans chasing him to no avail as he raced across midfield for the clear. Swanton forced a bad pass that Chong gobbled up. The Spartans scored on their next possession to make it 12-4. Chong then made a tough save look effortless. The Spartans added 2 late goals to make it a 12-6 final. Just like Thermopylae the Spartans fell to the unrelenting Cavs attack.
The Cavs outshot the Spartans 43-22. The score would have been more lopsided if not for 11 saves, many of them amazing, by the Spartan goalie. The Cavs held an 18-11 advantage on ground balls and Cuviello won 11 of 17 faceoffs. Facing constant double teams, Solomon had 4 assists and still managed 2 goals. Fruchterman had his 2nd4 goal game of the season. Hoffman had 2 goals and 2 assists. Sloan had a goal and assist with Bower chipping in with 2 assists. Morris and Andrews each added a goal for the well-balanced Cavs attack. The Cavs continued their physical play on defense with 8 takeaways. The defense of Duer, Stedham, and Magee played outstanding only allowing 13 shots through the 1st3 quarters. Garlepp continued his outstanding season with 5 saves while Chong recorded 4 saves in relief.
On the season the Cavs have now outscored the opposition 94-55.
