Hall of Fame Bio.
Walter Hawkins 1965-1966 Basketball
Walter Hawkins initially was a standout athlete in football,
baseball, and basketball at Luther Jackson HS, an all-black
high school in Falls Church. Walter became a Cavalier in
1965 when Fairfax County integrated the public schools,
closing his former school. At Woodson, Walter continued to
be an outstanding basketball player, excelling in defense and
rebounding, and in his senior year helped lead the Cavaliers
to the State semi-finals. As a senior, Walter was named
All-American and set the Virginia high school rebounding
record, with 30 rebounds in a single game and averaging 20
rebounds per game. Walter went on to play basketball at Neosho County Community
Junior College in Chanute, Kansas, where in 1968 he was voted Junior College All
America, and then at the University of Utah, where he captained a nationally ranked
team his final season. In 1968 Walter was selected as an alternate to the US Olympic
Basketball Team. After college, Walter was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys (football)
and also was invited to tryout for the Chicago Bulls (basketball), both in 1970.
