Pat Cunningham 1962-1975 Administrator
Pat Cunningham was the first Director of Student Activities
and Athletics at Woodson, a position he held for thirteen
years. During his tenure at Woodson, Pat was instrumental
in initiating the Woodson Athletic Booster Club and raising
funds for lights for the stadium as well as bringing in bleachers
to make Woodson’s stadium the largest in Virginia. As
a result, Woodson was able to host numerous regional and
VHSL championship and semi-final games. During his long
career in Fairfax County – Pat also was a teacher and coach
at Fairfax High School, and the Director of Health, Physical
Education and Athletics at Groveton High School – Pat was a leader in physical education
and athletics in Northern Virginia and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Pat is
credited as the person who had the idea of founding the Northern Virginia Athletic
Directors, Administrators, Coaches Association (NVADACA), which offers a scholarship
in his name. On November 14, 1975, in recognition of all that Pat had meant
to W.T. Woodson High School, the stadium was dedicated with his name.
