Helene Baroody Whaley 1979-1983 Basketball
Helene Baroody Whaley earned four varsity letters in basketball while a Cavalier and was a captain of Woodson’s 1983 State Champion basketball team. A four-year starting point guard for the Cavaliers, Helene was selected Parade All American (1983), All-Met Player of the Year (1983), Fairfax Journal Player of the Year (1983), Region Tournament Most Valuable Player (1981) as well as All-Region and All-District multiple years. In 1983 Helene played in the McDonald’s Capital Classic all-star game and was selected Most Valuable Player. Helene attended Auburn University where, as a four-year starter, she was a member of the 1987 SEC Regular Season and Tournament Champion women’s basketball team, is among Auburn’s career leaders in assists and steals, and scored more than 1,000 points in her career. At Auburn, Helene was named Female Athlete of the Year (1984–85) and Basketball Athlete of the Year (1985). Helene also participated in the U. S. Olympic Festival (1983), was a member of the USA Select Team (1987) and was selected AAU Junior Olympic All-American (1981 & 1983)
