Lew Oppenheim 1965-1997 Announcer-Contributor
Lew Oppenheim served as program chairman and president of the Woodson PTSA in the mid 1960’s, as well as serving on the principal’s advisory board, and as a parent advisor to the student government association. In the early 1970’s he became active with the Athletic Booster Club and continued doing so until the 1980’s. Lew began announcing all of Woodson’s home varsity football games in 1972 and continued doing so for twenty-five years, including pre-game and half time activities. During that time Lew announced all of the Northern Regional semi-final and championship games, as well as the state championship games which were held at Woodson. When Lew retired from announcing after twenty-five consecutive years, the Fairfax County School Board adopted a resolution on November 6, 1997, naming the stadium press box at Woodson the “Lew Oppenheim – Voice of the Cavaliers Press Box”. The resolution included a statement which read, “This is being done in honor of his dedication and service to the community and to the students whose lives have been enriched by his contributions”.
